Summary

The first vacuum system on this list is what many might consider a dark horse in the game. See, what most vacuum customers look for and praise is strong suction. They look for the kind of aggressive cleaning that is sure to get rid of the most stubbornly clinging pieces of dirt. But the HP Products Dirt Devil RV Central Vacuum System isn’t like that at all, and we like it that way.

Instead, it performs its job with leisure. It gets the task done without worrying about its performance, and that’s perfect when cleaning up carpets that require a light touch. One example is my wool carpeting, which tends to get harmed by aggressive suckers. Other kinds of carpet that might need this gentle touch are those with synthetic fibers, such as polyester or nylon. In fact, if you do have synthetic-fiber carpets, I’d go right ahead and say that this model is the number one for you.

What’s better is there’s more to this guy. Since it was made with an RV in mind, it’s highly space friendly. It disassembles and tucks away in a corner, occupying only 0.5 cubic feet. That’s a tremendous amount of space saved! Put it in storage, under a seat, in a closet—don’t worry about it, it’ll fit.

As icing on the cake, it also has an expansible hose to make those difficult-to-access hard no more. Overall, this is a wonderful package whose unassuming capabilities would make it welcome to any RV home.

It might be good to know though that some customer reviews kept bringing up this small thing, which I really can’t ignore. That it was difficult to install kept being mentioned. Take note of this before you jump in and decide that this is the right one for you.

  • Pros
  • Amazing storage capabilities
  • Far-reaching expandable hose
  • Great value
  • Strong suction
  • Warrantied for five years
  • Cons
  • Several people found this system difficult to install

Summary

This model comes from among the top brands in the vacuum manufacturing game: Dyson. If you own the Dyson Car+Boat Cord-Free Handheld Vacuum Cleaner, all your RV-cleaning issues will be virtually swept away. It’s that amazing and effortless at getting its job done.

This cordless unit is so highly prized because of its crazy great ability to get into all corners. Such maneuverability means that if you want your entire RV rid of sand and dirt, by golly it will be rid of sand and dirt. If said corner is difficult to access, why this model has an extensible hose too. No muck is safe—no stone left unturned, so to speak.

On top of all this, it also comes with a small motorized tool. Dog hair and other clinging filth will disappear from all upholstery lickety-split. In case you hadn’t realized yet, in terms of pure suction strength, this model is the best player in the arena.

If you still lack faith in this product, Dyson will help bolster it by providing a warranty good for two years. That kind of trust in what they put out in the market is a hallmark of their confidence in their workmanship. On the whole, this model is everything you could ever want in a cleaner—except, again, if you need a gentler mechanism to take care of delicate carpeting.

Full disclosure: it’s prohibitively expensive among handheld cleaners. It wouldn’t clean just my RV if I purchased it, it would downright clean up my savings too. I’m not looking for that to occur, but if money is no object, then vacuums don’t get any much superior than this.

  • Pros
  • Cordless
  • Has an extensible hose attachment
  • Small motorized tool allows for easy upholstery cleaning
  • Two-year warranty
  • V7 motor with powerful suction
  • Cons
  • Expensive

Summary

Pet owners would not be wrong to choose this model. The BISSELL Crosswave Pet Pro All in One Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner is the only wet and dry cleaner in this list. On top of that, BISSELL goes out of its way to add features and an optional bundle purchase to make pet owners’ lives easier.

This unit’s wet and dry feature means that it can act as both mop and vacuum without glitching the insides. Its high-surface-area pet brush sucks away any sort of muck that your pet decided to bring home that day. It also has a fur sieve that separates fur from other kinds of dirt so that vacuum aftercare isn’t a hassle.

Since I am a person with pets myself, I would highly welcome these features because they would make cleaning up so much more effortless. To further sweeten the deal, BISSELL has a bundle option that includes a specially concocted pet formula. This formula specifically targets removing any lingering pet smells.

Really, it’s amazing how much effort BISSELL put into designing this. You can tell from the product’s abilities that they really put careful thought into what pet owners need. And unlike other specialized tools, this unit still perfectly performs the base functions of a normal vacuum.

To top it all off, this model is lighter than most other wet/dry vacuums you’ll find in the market. This is surely a first-rate cleaner that will fulfill any and all expectations an RV-er would have.

Still, despite everything good we’ve said about this product, it still has one glaring negative that isn’t a surprise: it’s costly. Your wallet might hurt after you shell out for it, so think about that before adding the Crosswave to the shopping cart.

  • Pros
  • Can simultaneously mop and vacuum your floors
  • High-surface-area pet brush
  • Lightweight
  • Pet hair sieve
  • The option to buy the Crosswave + Pet Formula Bundle or just the Crosswave
  • Cons
  • Expensive

Summary

A downside I always encounter with bringing my dogs with me in my rig is that they bring dirt inside and leave their hairs all over the upholstery. Don’t get me wrong, I love my pets to the moon and back, but the mess they leave behind can sometimes get exhausting just to look at. Lucky for me, and for all pet owners, that the Shark Rocket Corded Ultra-Light Hand Vacuum exists.

I’d like to first tackle what may seem like points against this vacuum but aren’t really. Those among you who have any experience with hand vacuums may have discovered that they can be pretty weighty, meaning arm aching after some use. It also seems to make little sense to own a hand vacuum, which is supposedly for getting to those difficult-to-access places, that has a cord.

Not to worry because this model handles these two issues with ease. This hand vacuum weighs in at less than four pounds, so your arm won’t get tired from using it. Its cord is also 15 feet long, so you will have no difficulties with trying to span the length and breadth of your RV.

Onto the pet-handling aspects of this device: it comes with a small motorized brush that saves my upholstery from being matted with dog fur. In addition, it also comes with a TruePet motorized brush that magics away all the stains my dogs inevitably leave. Honestly, I can’t want for more in the pet department.

A warning to those already reaching into their wallets: several customer reviews have commented that the battery isn’t as efficient as its competitors—it loses charge quickly. And I totally understand that that just isn’t something that those who travel around in their RV are looking for.

  • Pros
  • Economical
  • Lightweight
  • Long, 15-foot cord
  • Small motorized brush
  • TruePet motorized brush
  • Cons
  • Some reviews say that the battery does not stay charged

Summary

The Dometic Central RV Vacuum System is a straightforward, no-fuss option for those who are looking to get the job done and over with. It showcases an excellent performance and doesn’t come bloated with additional features that you likely won’t use anyway.

Another great thing about this product is that the installation is easy as pie. Sometimes, after all, the true barrier to purchasing a great vacuum is how convoluted some of their installation instructions can be. With this model, there is no such barrier—install it in a storage compartment, in a closet, or under a seat, and you’re good.

It doesn’t take up much room, either. You will sacrifice very little space, and when you get started with the cleaning, you will soon find out another benefit: it has great suction.

This much power in so simple a tool is its selling point. Again, the job will get done, no frills, issues, or problems attached. At the end of the day, isn’t that the only thing we look for in these kinds of products?

To be honest, I wouldn’t settle for this product if I can avoid it. But if efficient and simple is what you want, then this unit could be the one for your rig.

  • Pros
  • Cordless
  • Easily installable; place in a storage compartment in closets, or under seats
  • Lightweight
  • Powerful suction
  • Takes up little space
  • Cons
  • Expensive

Summary

BLACK+DECKER has a great, upstanding reputation among vacuum cleaners. They’re known to continually release models that give only top-tier performances. The MAX Lithium Pivot Vacuum lives up to the brand name by being effective, highly maneuverable, and affordable.

The “pivot” part of its name is explainable by two features: the rotating nozzle and the twisting head. The rotating nozzle moves in a circle while still providing suction. This may seem like a small, even unnecessary, feature at first. But it begins to make sense when you think about all the moments repositioning the nuzzle will be saved.

Meanwhile, the twisting head means that the vacuum can move into position in all kinds of different directions. This means that this cleaner is incredibly useful if your RV has corners that like to escape cleaning.

Another bonus is that the vacuum isn’t really heavy. Again, this may seem small, but it actually saves quite a bit of energy when moving it around the RV. Its size is also storage-friendly, which to me is ever a great thing.

Best of all, despite all these great features, this device is affordable. Given the price, selecting this model for your RV shouldn’t put a dent in your wallet. It’s seriously bordering on being a steal.

Too bad that there is one humongous drawback to this device. Many, many customer reviews have warned that it is noisy. It reached the point that it was even more surprising to find a review that didn’t mention the noise.

The noise is a deal-breaker for me. I can’t stand making a clamor and having a throbbing headache each time I have to clean up in my RV.

  • Pros
  • Affordable
  • Pivoting head feature
  • Lightweight
  • Rotating nozzle
  • Rechargeable
  • Cons
  • Noisy

Summary

The SOWTECH Stick Vacuum is our first canister vacuum and our first convertible one. It’s high performing while still being incredibly low priced. We even go as far as to say that it may be the best bargain deal on this list. If you’re a little tight on cash right now, you may want to consider choosing this cleaner.

But don’t make the false assumption that SOWTECH was content to stop at making this their bargain deal. It has more to offer than just the low price. Since it’s convertible, that means that when you switch to the handheld version, it will easily get into those pesky tight spaces in your vehicle.

What’s more, even as an upright vacuum it’s lightweight. You can move this product from place to place inside your RV without getting winded. Its 16.5-foot cord also makes sure that you have as much reach and maneuver as you need without having to keep changing outlets.

Its ease of use and the economical price would make it attractive to bargain buyers. However, as with any low-priced item, you get what you pay for. Customer reviews have attested to the fact that its suction is lower powered than most other vacuums in the market.

Considering that my carpeting is woolen, a gentle suction is exactly what I want in an RV vacuum.

  • Pros
  • Long,16.5-foot cord
  • Can switch between upright and handheld
  • Cheap
  • Easy-to-remove waste/dust container
  • Lightweight
  • Cons
  • Customers have complained that its suction is lacking

Summary

I can say without hesitation that this is my favorite RV cleaner on the list. The Dyson V11 Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner has every desirable feature, except one (which we will discuss later).

Right off the bat, what makes it special is that it showcases a HEPA filter. This filter catches all the allergens on the surfaces and in the air of your RV and expels clean air in exchange. Suddenly, allergies are no longer my problem. If that isn’t the best anyone could ask from a vacuum cleaner, I don’t know what is.

In addition, this Dyson is cordless. You’re free to transfer from space to space within your RV. You don’t have to concern yourself with tangling up a long cord or running just short of that section of the floor you wanted to tackle next. Plus, it’s able to run on a full charge for an entire 40 minutes, which should be enough time to cover a good majority of your rig, if not the whole thing.

Another bonus is that this unit is easy on the arm. It isn’t heavy at all, which I’ve learned matters so much after I tried swinging around an awkwardly heavy vacuum.

Unfortunately, as I said, it doesn’t check off everything in my list of what I want in a vacuum. As you can expect from a product this good, its price range is well above average. Its cost may be an instant turnoff. As for myself, I’m going to go ahead, spoil myself, and splurge for this irreplaceable and inimitable appliance.

Honestly, you should buy it too if you have enough funds. If you don’t, and you’re a responsible person (unlike me), then I advise you to look somewhere else. Anyway, this article alone goes to show that there is plenty of other fish in the sea, so don’t blow your bank account unless you feel it’s absolutely necessary.

  • Pros
  • Can run for 40 minutes on a full charge
  • Converts to a handheld
  • Cordless
  • Lightweight
  • Uses a HEPA filter
  • Cons
  • Expensive

Summary

Those with eagle eyes for bargain prices can happily swoop in on this product. The VonHaus Gray 2 in 1 Corded Lightweight Stick Vacuum is an accomplished model in its own right. And it doesn’t try to convince buyers to break the bank while doing so. It completes the tasks it’s required to do and then some, as we will explain right away.

Its first admirable quality is its long, long cord. Its wire extends a full 19.5 feet, saving you from the tedious process of repeatedly unplugging and plugging throughout your RV. It also has an easily removable dust container. That means that you can dispose of waste without having to expend too much energy fiddling with the chamber, unlike other models.

Third, this model can switch between being upright and being handheld. As we have repeatedly stated before, handhelds are convenient for getting into those corners and crevices where dust likes to hide.

Finally, you can choose between two colors, gray and orange. Why does this matter? Actually, it doesn’t, really, but having the option to customize is nice. I like orange, too.

However, the nice orange color isn’t enough for me to overlook one glaring downside to this model. Many customer reviews complained that this vacuum started breaking after a thorough use. This is a bright red warning I can’t let go, so this is a pass for me.

  • Pros
  • Comes in orange or gray
  • Converts between upright and handheld
  • Easily removable dust container
  • Economical price
  • Long, 19.5-foot cord
  • Cons
  • Customers have complained about breakage after heavy use

Summary

Affordability meets good quality in the BLACK+DECKER Lithium Hand Vacuum. Unlike a few other items in this list, choosing this model won’t damage your bank account. Even better, though it is economical, it still performs well.

One plus point for its quality is its battery life. It uses a lithium-ion battery that packs a punch, so its suction is strong. Another plus is that it’s cordless. As you know by now, I dislike wires with a passion. They get all tangled up and I don’t have a trove of outlets in my vehicle. Being wireless means that I can take the handheld with me wherever I want without having to stress about cord placement.

So far, these features are wonderful and encouraging because they mean that this model is user-friendly. If that isn’t enough, there’s also the fact that it comes with a flip-up brush that helps keep your upholstery clean of pet fluff. Again, I find this absolutely necessary as a person with pets. My dogs shed everywhere and the amount is staggering.

All in all, this handheld has quite a bit going for it that would quickly send it to the top of my list—if not for one thing. It’s noisy. Normally, I wouldn’t pay much attention to reviews complaining about the noise because I know that people can be uptight about that. But in this case, the complaints were so prevalent that I felt duty-bound to mention it.

If the noise level is enough to warrant a whole mob of people to complain about it, then the cleaner just isn’t worth it for me. I go on my trips to relax, and all that noise would only counter my goal.

  • Pros
  • Affordable
  • Cleans upholstery with a flip-up brush
  • Cordless
  • Lithium-ion battery leads to long battery life and powerful suction
  • Rechargeable
  • Cons
  • Noisy

Everything You Need to Know About RV Vacuums

At this point, you may be wondering why there’s all this fuss about selecting exactly what model cleaner should go in your RV. It’s just a vacuum. But trust us when we say that there are several factors that need to be taken seriously and considered to ensure that the RV vacuum you select is topnotch and fitting for your situation.

This section is dedicated to teaching you what to look for in an RV vacuum. At the end of it, you should confidently be able to tell which models have the right features and which have the wrong ones for you.

What kind of vacuum do I want?

There are five types of cleaners to consider in the world of RV vacuuming: upright or canister vacuums, steam vacuums, wet and dry vacuums, handheld vacuums, and RV central vacuum systems.

The FAQ section at the end of this article will discuss each type with more depth. For now, what we want to share is that you should be aware of the situations you’ll likely encounter in your RV. If you do, then you will correctly choose which type is the one that will tackle your issues best.

For example, in my case, I’d prefer to go with an RV central vacuum system because they’re known to store easily. They can be installed in a storage compartment, under seats, or even inside closets.

At the same time, I’m looking at steam vacuums and handhelds because I will bring pets with me during the trip. Steam vacuums and handhelds are great for just this situation because they’re great at getting rid of pet odors and disinfecting and stains that they might leave. In addition, handhelds have added maneuverability that the other types don’t have. They can reach nook and crannies, which might be what you need for your rig.

If you figure that you’ll unavoidably encounter messes both wet and dry, then choosing a wet and dry vacuum should be a no brainer.

Ultimately, choosing the best RV vacuum is all about having some foresight and predicting what kind of messes and situations you’ll be meeting in the future. That’s why you should think really hard about what you need in your RV and pick a model that matches.

How easy to use is the vacuum?

In an ideal world, a vacuum would be simple and easy to use. But we sadly don’t live in that kind of world. Like many other products in this day and age, manufacturers made vacuums hard.

Avoid the pain of finding out that your vacuum is not worth the effort after you’ve already shelled out money for it. Make sure that the model you choose isn’t complicated.

The upside to this is that you can figure that out by reading the always-enjoyable customer reviews. There is no way that the customers won’t sing a cleaner’s praises if it’s great, or complain about it up and down if it’s terrible. That’s why the review section exists, after all. They let you know if a product is user-friendly.

Frankly, this is the number one factor to consider when purchasing a vacuum. No one will want to use a tool that only brings them stress, and cleaning is already a chore as it is. So do yourself a favor and rely on my judgment or read customer reviews before spending any money.

How noisy is it?

Again, luckily for us that for this factor we can rely on the customer reviews to reveal the truth. If someone says that a product is deafening, better believe it and be on your way.

I mean, do you want to introduce stress and discord inside the space of your RV? An RV should be a haven, a place to rest and relax. A noisy vacuum would only counter both aspects and be an unpleasant experience for all passengers on board.

Rather, keep an eye out for feedback that praises the model as exceptionally quiet or as maintaining a manageable noise level. Sadly, there isn’t a unit that is completely silent, so be skeptical of any brand that claims whisper quiet as their product’s selling point.

How heavy is it?

Since RV vacuums come in many different forms, naturally they step in at much different weight, too. This may not be a shocker, but you would do well not to underestimate it. It’s just as fundamental to the vacuum decision tree as the rest.

I weigh in so much on this quality because any extra pounds add up very quickly. It may not amount to much at first, but soon you’ll be vacuuming and vacuuming and you’ll notice your arm tire. It gets taxing after the nth time you move it.

That’s why you want a light unit. It makes cleaning so much easier when you don’t dread being tired after, doubly so if you’re similar to me who keeps spilling everything.

Will it keep my carpet fibers safe?

If you’re keen on keeping your carpet safe from wear and tear, then make sure to take this question seriously. The factors that will determine the answer to this question are one, what type of fibers your carpet has, and two, how strong the suction of your vacuum will be.

Your carpet is most likely made of synthetic fibers such as elofin, polyester, or nylon. In this case, lucky for you, you don’t need to fret. They can take a beating and sustain any aggressive action from powerful suction.

On the other hand, natural fibers need some more tender love and care. If your carpet completely covers the floor as mine does, then most probably it’s wool. In that case, avoid cleaners with powerful suctions because they will only damage your carpet. Wool can take a beating, but only so much.

While you’re at it, try to get a vacuum with a revolving brush. This revolving brush should have gentle bristles. The bristles shouldn’t be as dense as your carpet fibers, either, or else you’ll wear your carpet out.

All this means that for me, I need to get a gentle vacuum. If I do, then my carpet will surely be pristine for many years—even if I do keep spilling everything. Similarly, you should follow my example and assess your carpet fibers and vacuum suction power to ensure you won’t regret your purchase.

How long will the battery life last?

If you do choose an RV vacuum that has a battery, check the battery life. The entire point of getting a battery-powered one, after all, is so that you can move around your rig without a cord tailing you. You’ll defeat that purpose if you get a battery-powered cleaner that constantly needs to be plugged back in.

In addition, ensure that the battery of your vacuum is top tier. Customer reviews are your friends, so check them out and see what they have to disclose about battery performance. Essentially, you want a vacuum that can last a long, thorough cleaning session.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Let’s say you read through this entire article so far and you still have some questions bouncing around in your head. That’s okay, that’s what this section is for. We’re going to try to address any leftover questions and problems you might have remaining regarding these products.

What defines RV vacuums?

There are many different kinds of RV vacuums in the market today. That makes it difficult to speak of RV vacuums in broad terms. However, the general idea behind them is that they’ll take care of the muck that tends to pile up in your RV. To add to this, the difference between RV cleaners and household cleaners is that manufacturers tend to modify a few features—such as suction—to suit RV environments more.

The thing about RV environments is that there are as many of them as there are people with RVs. That’s why we have so many kinds of vacuums available, and why what might work for one rig may be godawful for another.

To prevent something as disastrous as picking the wrong vacuum from happening, you need to consider a few things (which we already elaborated on in the previous section). Each of them will help you decide which is the RV vacuum you need.

However, there are a few parts to an RV vacuum that should remain the same whichever you pick. These are the porous bag, electric motor, fan, intake port, and exhaust port. When you connect the vacuum to a power source, you turn on the motor. The motor’s job is to spin the fan so that air flows into the exhaust port, creating suction. Meanwhile, the intake port harnesses the suction generated by the exhaust port and pushes it towards the cleaner. This leads to friction that sucks debris and dirt inside the vacuum.

But really, at the end of the day, the aim is to find a vacuum that meets all your requirements and won’t blow your budget. Our hope is that our article will help with just that—giving you an idea of what to get. Maybe you can even choose a model from our list!

What kinds of RV vacuums are out there?

rv vacuums

Now that we’ve tackled the definition of a vacuum and the mechanism behind it, we’re going to move onto the different kinds you’ll meet during your research. You’ll encounter five kinds, which we briefly mentioned above: steam vacuums, handheld vacuums, canister or upright vacuums, wet and dry vacuums, and RV central vacuum systems.

Steam RV Vacuums

Pet owners, rejoice, for this product was practically made for you. Steam vacuums are amazing in that they were specifically designed to deal with mold or pet-caused stains. I own dogs, myself so I know the amount of grief they can cause to your furniture, whether it’s a restroom accident or an upchuck.

Handheld Vacuums

Handhelds are the go-to choice when you have an abundance of difficult-to-reach spaces in your RV. As their name suggests, they’re operated by hand. This means heightened storability and maneuverability. Note that they are usually heavy and high-powered because they’re powered by a battery.

Upright or Canister RV Vacuums

Consider uprights a close cousin of the handhelds. They typically end up offering the same kind of control and maneuverability, anyway, because they have attachments that lengthen the vacuum’s arm. These attachments help with getting into those nooks and crannies we keep mentioning.

Whether this type is the best choice for you, though, depends on how much space you have. They take up quite a bit of space, so they aren’t good fits for smaller RVs.

Wet and Dry RV Vacuums

The name is the form is the function with this one. Wet and dry vacuums have different receptacles for wet mess and dry mess. As you would expect, that means they’re amazing at resolving wet messes such as bathrooms and sinks.

But if you do not anticipate meeting plenty of wet issues in your RV’s future, then there really isn’t much point to getting one. It wouldn’t be logically or financially sound.

RV Central Vacuum Systems

These are the John and Jane Does of the RV vacuum cleaning world. They’re usually what comes with your RV when you first buy it. They need to stay connected to a power source to function, but they do have some perks, such as easy storage. So don’t turn your nose up at them too soon.

Why get an RV vacuum in the first place?

You’re fully aware of why you should invest in an RV vacuum; don’t try to deny it. You need one for the simple yet practical argument that you need to maintain your RV and the things inside it free from sand, dust, and other nuisances.

Do you enjoy discovering you have sand left inside your shoes after a great day at the beach? Do you like stains and cobwebs? Your answer’s probably (so we hope) “no,” so do the right thing and have one well within reach. Your life will be easier, you’ll stay in good health and hygiene, and your future self will thank you.

As to why you should get a vacuum specific for RVs, and not a typical household version, that’s due to a difference in manufacturing. Households have environments and surfaces different from RVs, so it follows that the vacuums made for them have different specifications. An example is that generally speaking, RV vacuums’ sizes and shapes are different to accommodate the unique shape and limited space of RVs.

In short, an RV vacuum is made to fit an RV like a glove. As a result, choosing a regular household-issue simply won’t make the cut and won’t make sense. Of course, they’ll work for your rig, but not in any way that will save time, effort, and stress.

Wrap-Up

Phew, that was a lot to take in. But now we’re confident that with all the information about RV cleaners that you’ve mastered, you are ready to pick the unit for you. Here comes the fun part—making a few clicks on Amazon to get to the RV vacuum page and adding said unit to your cart. Once that’s done, no dust, sand, muck, or mess will ever get the better of you during your trips. All you have to do is take your vacuum out and witness as it sucks all that dirt and your worries away.

After that—voila! There’ll be nothing else to keep you from having fun during your vacation. You can just rest and relax because you’ll be comfortable with the confidence that allergy or sand attacks is a thing of the past. I am so aware that it sucks when that happens, as I’m sure you know too.

With that, we have shared every shred of information we wish to impart. Thank you for reading. Remember to make sure that the vacuum you get will fulfill all the criteria we just mentioned. If it does, then we promise that you will never look back and regret. On the contrary, you’ll be overjoyed.
